Feminist Sonographies of Situated Listening (2023)
This installation integrates our collective research and artistic creation with individual multidisciplinary approaches that utilize decolonial feminist sound methodologies. We named these practices Sono-(soro)rities to emphasize the importance of collective thinking within gender studies and sonic practices, particularly in the context of the Global South and its colonial history.
The installation can be understood through three layers: Sonic, Textual, and Graphical (conceptual mapping), offering varied sensory engagement for the audience. The sound component features a 54-minute soundtrack played through 10 radios, which includes a collective statement and brief sound essays from each member. The collective voice is delivered via a voice-over that narrates the development and principles of the group while integrating the sound essays.
Ana Alfonsina Mora and Laura Balboa selected the soundtracks, connecting them to their research on music production by women, Queer, transgender, and non-binary musicians in the Americas. Their work is part of their involvement in radio production, specifically with Bulla Radio and Minga Radio, which air on Radio Nopal in Mexico and Radio CASo in Argentina.
This installation was showcased in the group exhibition "The Institution of Knowledge," a research-creation exhibition and symposium organized by Geoffrey Rockwell (Kule Institute for Advanced Study) and Natalie Loveless (Research-Creation and Social Justice CoLABoratory). It was displayed at FAB Gallery, part of the University of Alberta's Department of Fine Arts
